Winter Haven earned its nickname — the Chain of Lakes City — honestly. The city sits at the center of a system of over 50 lakes connected by 24 navigable canals, forming the headwaters of the Peace River. With open water visible from virtually every neighborhood, Winter Haven has some of the highest ambient outdoor humidity of any inland Florida city. Winter Haven's Chain of Lakes is one of Florida's most distinctive urban environments — a city built among and around a connected system of lakes and canals that form the source of the Peace River. The North Chain and South Chain of lakes, linked by hand-dug canals started in 1915, create a continuous open-water environment that generates persistent lagoonal humidity across every Winter Haven neighborhood. New residential development in the 33881 and 33884 ZIP codes has created a market for newer homes — but even newer construction isn't immune to Florida's humidity when it sits adjacent to a lake chain that spans the entire width of the city.
